September 2006
I have not been involved in much this month as I was on Annual Leave for much of the month.
However, I was involved in the Keighley Worksafe Project. This was aimed at primary school children, with different schools from around Bradford and Keighley going to Bradford Barracks. There we had different stations set up for
- Fire safety - the fire service came to give the children a talk and show the children a video. The fire service also did a role-play with the children on what to do in case of a fire.
- Gas - Northern Gas talked about what to do if the children thought there was a gas leak in the household and how to turn the gas off at the mains. They also did a role- play on how to check the ID of someone who comes to the door asking to come in.
- Construction Representatives - talked about all the dangers on a construction site and why you should avoid going to one. The children also got advice on why they should not drink anything from a construction site.
- Kitchen - This area was set out as an unsafe kitchen and the children had to go round and pick out the unsafe issues and explain why it is unsafe.
- Bus - Advice was given on how to behave on a bus.
- Water - Advice was given on how to swim. Then a role-play was done on how to help someone in water who can't swim and how the person, who is doing the saving, should make sure they are in a safe position themselves.
- Anti-bullying - The police came to give the children a talk on what can happen to children which bully other children. A role-play was done on how the reactions of the children can make the bully feel he/she has power and how this can be stopped.
It was all really interesting and the children involved got a huge amount out of it.
