January 2007

This month I have been helping out at Older People's Luncheon Club at Bracken Bank. There are 15 to 20 people who attend each week, most of whom are women.
The luncheon club is a session for people in the community to get together and enjoy a healthy lunch, with a healthy pudding to follow. Once lunch is over, there is an activity for the group to take part in. I enjoy attending the session as I am helping out with the cooking, cleaning and taking part in the activity session, which are things I have not had as much experience of, as an Apprentice.

I have also been attending the health checks for students and teachers at Keighley College. This runs either once a week or once a fortnight and each individual check takes about 15 minutes. It's really good as I am learning more and more each time, about the MOT health checks while working with the students and teachers. It was really funny at times when I first attended this session because the student or teacher who was having the check up would start asking me questions as if I was a fully trained professional. So when I next attended, I introduced myself and told them I was a Health Apprentice and I was supporting my work colleague. I also always asked their permission for me to be in the same room, while they were being checked by the professional. Some people were not as comfortable with someone else being there- mostly it's the boys, but they all did say that it it's fine by them, which was good. The session has a really good turn out from the both the students and teachers.
