December 2006

I have been supporting a young girls club, which has been running since November at the Keighley Highfield Centre from 4.30pm till 6.30pm every Monday. It has been a great success; we have many Asian girls aged 13 to 16+ who have attended every week.
Each week we start we do something different, having asked the girls what they would like to do. Both myself and other Health Apprentice, Nasreen who is at based at Keighley Voluntary Services (supervised by Rukhsana of course), organise the activities, once the girls have come up with an idea. So far we have done baking a healthy cake, designing the group name banner, henna painting and healthy food quizzes.
We have had good feed back from the girls and we try to do our best to make sure that the girls get the most out of the group.

Also this month, I have continued with the anti bullying work in schools in Keighley and district. For the past two weeks, my Health Apprentice colleague, Amreen, and I have been working with Year seven students. Again it consisted of a talk in class time, given directly to the students and then a question and answer session. This showed that the students were interested in what was being said to them and it made some students realise that they should speak up rather than keep it to themselves.
