November 2006

I have attended a 'learn through play' course with the Pre-School learning alliance. This was a four week course, to help parents become more confident when doing activities with their children. The course was also to give staff in pre-school settings more knowledge and experience, when working with parents and their children.
We did painting, drawing and made things using different materials. We made treasure baskets and also our very own stories for story sacks.

I was also involved in the one day Keighley Elderly Initiative Group event that was held at Victoria Hall. Elderly people form different groups were invited to come along, and there was entertainment (on health and safety issues) as well as healthy food provided, which some of the Health Apprentices helped out with. Loads of people attended and it turned out to be a great day.

I attended the Community Health Team Resources Road show at Holy Family School. This was a fun afternoon. As well as looking at all the different resources available from the PCT we also played Fruit & Veg bingo, made smoothies, played a game with the parachute and also some other playground games. The only thing we didn't do is dress up as a carrot!! Thank goodness for that!!!!!I received lots of ideas for our own events and picked up lots of useful information.

I have applied to community chest for £200.00 to pay for some T'shirts for the breast- feeding peer support group. The t-shirts will have "Breast feeding Peer Supporter" printed on the back. A peer counsellor will wear the t-shirts when working in the community, at health clinics, parent education classes and when working in the hospital, so that she can easily be identified by a breast feeding/pregnant mother, who may need help or just knowledge and information.
I am also in the process of designing a breastfeeding support leaflet, for all staff to use and give out to mums and 'mums to be'.
