January 2006

At the moment I am doing an accredited course called Cook and Eat. At the end of the course I will be able to deliver Cook and Eat sessions to a variety of groups. The course is a pilot scheme for this area, but in other parts of the country, the course has been running for a number of years.
There are 3 modules and at the moment I have nearly completed the first one. I have really enjoyed doing it. We have covered a variety of subjects, including healthy eating, physical activity, oral health, food labels (salt, sugar, fat), vitamin and mineral supplements, weaning, ethnic food, fussy eaters, weight management and food hygiene.

I have learnt much on the course that has made me sit up and take more notice of what I am putting into my, and my families' bodies. What I buy in my weekly shop has changed, the contents of my fridge are totally different and the food in my children's lunch boxes has changed. I am more aware of what is in foods, the different types of foods out there, and the benefits and the preventative effects some foods provide.

I now think my family and I are healthier than before, not just because of this course but also due to my other work as a Health Apprentice.
