January 2007

This month I have continued to support 2 luncheon clubs, 1 in Braithwaite and 1 in Bracken Bank. I am also still supporting the family fun fitness sessions held at Fitness First in Keighley and I am also still running the parent and toddler group on Braithwaite.
In addition to this we also finished the cookery sessions at a primary school in Keighley. Busy, busy, busy!!!!

If you think back to a few months ago, I told you about some training I did called Speakeasy. This was a train the trainer's course, where I did the course but then had to deliver it to other people. This month I have been running 2 courses at my place of work, Keighley Healthy Living Network, with a co- facilitator. If you can't remember what the course is about, well that's OK, as I'm going to tell you again anyway. Speakeasy is a 7 week accredited course run by the Family Planning Association. It focuses on sex, relationships and growing up and we cover all sorts of subjects such as puberty, media images, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and much more.
This course is aimed at parents and is accredited by the Open College Network, and you can either go for level 1 or 2. Level one is just making a list on your work sheet, but for level 2 you have to describe (in sentences). However, you don't have to go for accreditation as you can just come to the course and gain valuable knowledge.

We are now in week 2 of the course. I am finding that I love facilitating this course. In the first week, I was a little apprehensive, but within the first half hour, I found my self relaxing and enjoying myself more and more. The people on the course are also having a fantastic time, as at the end of every session they say they can't wait to come back.
So far we have covered the topics of how we received sex education when we were at school, who is responsible for children's sex and relationships education currently and the big one puberty.
Tune in next month to found out more.
