July 2006

This month I have been helping out at a new Older People's Luncheon Club, in Bracken Bank. Initially it is only running for 6 weeks, with the hope that it will run for longer. At these sessions, we have had around 20 people, most of whom are women.
At each session the people enjoy a healthy style buffet lunch, with a healthy pudding to follow. Lunch is followed by a variety of activity sessions, which have included such things as exercise, relaxation techniques, reflexology, reminiscence, games and music and even a day trip out in to the Yorkshire Dales.

At the end of the month, I was one of the leaders of KHLN's 'Summer Fun' activity scheme for children. In the first week we enjoyed team games, baking, and a wildlife walk in Malham, which included stream dipping. Most of the children enjoyed this, although I think they would have liked the stream to have been a little bit deeper, as it was a very hot day! Also in that week we went to Kilnsey, where they went horse riding, and around the trout farm. Both were a big hit-they could not stop talking about which horse they had been on, and what it was called, and how big the fish were. On the last day of the week, we stayed in the KHLN building where we made smoothies and pizzas, and we also did some street dancing. This was also a hit with them. They all got to try new fruit and vegetables, and to experiment with them. The pizza making was fun, with one of the children turning theirs into a face. The street dancing was fantastic and at lunchtime some of the morning's group gave us a little performance. It was really good to see all of them enjoying themselves.

Tune in next time to find out about the second week of activities.
